The cold problem for traditional alfalfa
Standard alfalfa cultivars from Mediterranean or temperate breeding programs (Spain, Argentina, USA) have fall dormancy ratings of 5-9, meaning they go dormant in autumn but don't tolerate extreme cold. Below -15°C they suffer crown damage. Below -20°C the stand dies completely.
For continental climates — Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Mongolia, Northern China, Iran highlands, Eastern Turkey, Russian Federation, Belarus — temperate alfalfa simply isn't viable. Farmers must either re-seed annually (expensive) or use a true cold-tolerant variety.
What makes KN92 different
KN92 was developed in Pakistan's cooler northern zones (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Northern Punjab, Azad Kashmir) where winters average -15°C with extremes to -25°C. The variety has fall dormancy rating 3-4 with strong winter hardiness:
- Winter dormancy to -25°C — crowns survive insulated by snowpack
- Quick spring recovery — first cut 50-60 days after thaw
- 8-10 cuts per year under continental irrigation patterns
- Crude protein 22-26% at bloom
- Deep root 3-5m, drought-tolerant in late summer
- Compatible with rotation — fits cotton-alfalfa, wheat-alfalfa rotations
Comparison vs other cold-tolerant varieties
| Variety | Origin | Fall dormancy | Winter hardiness | Cuts/yr | FOB origin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KN92 | Pakistan | 3-4 | -25°C | 8-10 | ,800-2,100/MT |
| Lobo | Russia | 3 | -30°C | 6-8 | ,200-2,800/MT (sanctioned) |
| Sinskaya | Russia/USSR | 3 | -25°C | 6-8 | ,200-2,800/MT (sanctioned) |
| AC Caribou | Canada | 2 | -28°C | 7-9 | ,600-3,200/MT |
| Vernal | USA | 3 | -22°C | 7-9 | ,800-3,400/MT |
| Voronezhskaya 6 | Russia | 3 | -25°C | 7-9 | ,400-3,000/MT (sanctioned) |
KN92's combination of cold tolerance + Pakistan-origin pricing + dodder-free ISTA certification makes it the best value for cold-region buyers. Russian-origin varieties face trade-finance complications since 2022; Canadian/US varieties cost 40-60% more.

Sowing rate and management
- Sowing window: Late March to mid-May after final frost. Some regions also autumn-sow late August to early September.
- Seeding rate: 22-28 kg/hectare pure stand; 14-18 kg/ha with companion grass
- Sowing depth: 1.5-2.5 cm
- Soil pH: 6.5-7.5 preferred; tolerates 5.5-8.0
- Rhizobium inoculation: Recommended on first-time alfalfa fields. Strain Sinorhizobium meliloti.
- Fall management: Last cut at least 35-45 days before first hard frost to allow crown carbohydrate accumulation
- Snow protection: Avoid grazing late autumn; snowpack insulates crowns

Can KN92 grow in hot climates? No. For hot climates above 30°C average use TAIZTAR. KN92 will go dormant or burn in summer heat above 38°C.
What is the fall dormancy rating? KN92 is fall dormancy class 3-4 — meaning it enters dormancy in early autumn and holds vigour reserves through winter.
Is KN92 GMO? No. Conventional bred, non-GMO. Suitable for organic certification.
Can I blend KN92 with grass species? Yes. Common companions in continental climates: brome grass, timothy, orchardgrass, tall fescue. We supply mixed seed bags on request.
